If your work depends on connectivity—card machines, cloud apps, calls, remote access—business broadband offers the stability, support and SLAs consumer plans don’t. It’s designed to keep you online when it matters.
A static IP doesn’t change. It simplifies VPNs and remote access, allows hosting internal tools or services, supports VoIP and makes it easier to whitelist your connection for partners and platforms.
Business plans typically include priority fault handling, defined fix times (SLAs), 24/7 access to technical teams, and shorter engineer lead times—vital when downtime costs money.
Common options include enhanced firewalls, malware filtering, VPN access, DDoS protection and backup add-ons—helping you protect payment data and sensitive information.
Some residential contracts limit commercial use and don’t offer business-grade SLAs. If you’re trading, a business plan is usually more suitable; check your provider’s terms.
Often the business portion of your connectivity can be claimed as an expense, but rules vary. Keep records and seek professional tax advice for your situation.
Depending on location: FTTC/SoGEA (fibre to cabinet), FTTP (full fibre), cable, dedicated leased lines, and sometimes 4G/5G broadband. Full fibre and leased lines provide the best performance and resilience.
Most new services run without a traditional phone line. For calls, businesses typically use VoIP (cloud phone systems or SIP trunks) over the same broadband connection.
Map speed to workload. Heavy video calls, large file transfers and cloud apps benefit from higher download and upload speeds. If uptime is critical, consider a leased line or a 4G/5G backup.
Switching can be coordinated to minimise disruption. Many providers offer managed migrations and out-of-hours installs—ask for their plan and SLAs before you commit.
